5/13/2023 0 Comments Archenemies bookThere were six street lamps, but three of them were burned out. “We’re on the move.”Īdrian tapped his fingers against the rooftop ledge, wishing the back entrance to the hospital had better lighting. “Roger that,” Oscar’s voice crackled back at him. Still waiting on internal recon from Monarch.” Set your stations to the south and east escape routes. Suspected getaway vehicle is parked at Seventy-Ninth and Fletcher Way. Could be more, but I can’t see into the back.”Īdrian lifted his wrist toward his mouth, speaking into his communication band. Steam was rising from its exhaust pipe in great white clouds. “Nondescript, blacked-out windows, engine still running even though it’s been parked since we got here.”Īdrian sought out the van. “That van on the corner.” She swiveled her view from the vehicle to the hospital door and back. “I have eyes on the getaway vehicle,” said Nova, who was watching the quiet streets through a pair of binoculars. The dimness made it difficult to see anything ten stories below, beyond a couple of vans and a supply truck. It was early morning-the sun hadn’t risen yet, though hints of light were turning the sky from charcoal gray to pale violet. ADRIAN CROUCHED ON THE ROOFTOP, peering at the delivery entrance behind Gatlon City Hospital. One out fellow now almost totally forgotten was a man whose life spanned the first half of the 20th century: Harry Hervey (19001951), author of The Gay Sarong, was not just a bestselling novelist, but a screenwriter, playwright, and adventurer. That used to be the standard reaction but more and more we're coming to realize that many colorful gay men and women were on the scene long before Stonewall, influencing popular culture, even producing works with same-sex situations. Who was this American author named Harry Hervey? And could this astonishingly frank book about an obviously gay man really have been published in the 1920s? Pretorius thought, and wrote, about this chance encounter as if he had found a message in a bottle, having unrolled a cri de coeur from the past. Intrigued, he started reading the story of a man who gives up his wife-and women-for a handsome younger man. IN THE 1990s, in a used bookstore in South Africa, journalist William Pretorius stumbled upon a battered copy of a novel titled The Gay Sarong published in 1925. It is a writer's life, illustrating how the concerns of her work arise and develop, and a political life, which establishes Woolf as a radically sceptical, subversive, courageous feminist. This is a vivid, close-up portrait, returning to primary sources, and showing Woolf as occupying a distinct, even uneasy position with 'Bloomsbury'. Her book moves freely between a richly detailed life-story and new attempts to understand crucial questions - the impact of her childhood, the cause and nature of her madness and suicide, the truth about her marriage, her feelings for women, her prejudies and obsessions. Hermione Lee sees Virginia Woolf afresh, in her historical setting and as a vital figure for our times. 5/13/2023 0 Comments Lovely by Jess Hong(If I have left your favourite off the list, please do comment below and share it with us all!). Here are my personal favourite children’s books that celebrate diversity. Not only can these messages help children value the people around them, they also send a strong signal about their own personal value as uniquely different individuals, helping to build self-esteem and confidence as well as friendship and emotional skills. This has huge advantages in terms of being able to organise information efficiently in their brains but it can throw up some very direct questions (“ What’s wrong with that boy’s hand?“) and some incorrect assumptions (“ Amrita’s skin is brown because her mummy stayed out in the sun too long.“) while they try to work through it all.Ĭhildren’s books that celebrate diversity in an active and warm way are hugely helpful for talking to children about diversity issues and for promoting an inclusive mindset. To do that, they use a lot of categorical thinking in which they allocate people or things into groups. Young children have to make sense of the world in a very short space of time. Children’s books that celebrate diversityĭifferences really matter to children. 5/13/2023 0 Comments Pumpkin cat anne mortimerSavage's adaptation of this popular Halloween poem is wickedly clever. This delightful counting down book is the breakout hit in my household this year. Ten Orange Pumpkins: A Counting Book by Stephen Savage (Find past years here and here.) Happy Halloween! 1. This is my third published list of Halloween season books. But now it's a beloved, much-anticipated holiday, and I owe much of that to reading good picture books throughout the fall each year. Halloween was challenging for my kids at first. When kids begin to get this, and feel comfortable in the flow of it, their world expands. But there is a structure to the year itself and the holidays that communities celebrate. But while these changes are gradual, holidays happen suddenly, complete with all manner of different foods and trappings, places to go, and complex social expectations. Holidays may be challenging for kids with autism new seasons bring sensory changes and adjustments to daily living routines and the environment itself. Reading seasonal and holiday books is the best way I know of to connect my kids to the cycle of the year. 5/13/2023 0 Comments Genghis Khan by John ManOverall this is a very readable and interesting biography. Chapter 10: Introduction: On Death and How to Survive It.This is more than just a gripping account of Genghis' rise and conquests. His undiscovered grave, with its imagined treasures, remains the subject of intrigue and speculation. To secure his conquests and then extend them, his heirs kept his death a secret, and secrecy has surrounded him ever since. Brilliant and original as well as ruthless, he ruled an empire twice the size of Rome's until his death in 1227 placed all at risk. Yet he went on to found the world's greatest land empire and change the course of world history. In a supreme paradox, the world's most ruthless conqueror has become a force for peace and reconciliation.Īs a teenager, Genghis was a fugitive, hiding from enemies on a remote mountainside. In his so-called Mausoleum in Inner Mongolia, worshippers seek the blessing of his spirit. Yet in his homeland of Mongolia he is the revered father of the nation, and the Chinese honor him as the founder of a dynasty. To Muslims, Russians and westerners, he is a murderer of millions, a brutal oppressor. Genghis Khan is one of history's immortals, alive in memory as a scourge, hero, military genius and demi-god. 5/13/2023 0 Comments Jude deveraux highland seriesHer historical romances often have storylines centered on strong heroines and how they meet the heroes. That same year, Fleming told a friend: ‘I am going to write the spy story to end all spy stories.’ Eight years on, Fleming hammered out two thousand words a day between dawn and the first cocktail at his villa GoldenEye in Jamaica (a creative process I can only hope to emulate). In 1944, as a commander-Bond’s later rank-Fleming created the intelligence-gathering 30 Commando Assault Unit, which he dubbed ‘Red Indians’, that would assist in the invasion of Normandy. When World War Two broke out, Ian Fleming went from a career of exciting journalism, and then boredom as a banker, to joining naval intelligence. Seeking distraction from his upcoming wedding, Ian Fleming sat down at his Royal portable typewriter in Jamaica and wrote what-after a few amendments-would become an immortal line in literature, and my favourite opening of any novel: ‘The scent and smoke and sweat of a casino are nauseating at three in the morning.’ The authority of this sentence hints at the other, earlier origin for James Bond, more than a distraction from impending married life. One starts on a February morning in 1952. 5/12/2023 0 Comments Stokely carmichael speechTags: 1964 Economic Opportunity Act, A Negro's Own Evaluation, american photographer, American photography, American photojournalism, anti–Vietnam War demonstration, Black American art, black American photographer, Black American photography, black nationalism, Black Panther Party pamphlet, Black Panthers, Black Power, Black Power: The Politics of Liberation, black urban political leadership, Born Black, Carmichael (bottom) speaking to SNCC members and staff of The Movement, Carmichael at a SNCC gathering, Carmichael before an appearance on KTTV, Carmichael continuing the campaign for voter registration in Lowndes County, Carmichael in Lowndes County, Carmichael leaving the Watts rally in a Community Alert Patrol car, Carmichael speaking at a private home, Carmichael speaking at Spring Mobilization to End the War in Vietnam, Carmichael speaking to SNCC members and staff of The Movement, Carmichael with Charles V.
